Renton ideal location for COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing facility

On April 20, the Renton City Council voted on the idea of recruiting a coronavirus vaccine manufacturing facility.

Even though there’s no vaccine ready, city leaders said they’re positioning themselves as a possible site to let companies know they’ll work with them to make it happen.

Renton’s mayor says he wants the world to know they’d welcome a manufacturer. “Renton is already known as one of the nation’s manufacturing hubs and is the Northwest’s leader in healthcare,” said  Mayor Armondo Pavone. “The ideal location will need a combination of manufacturing capacity, experience in healthcare, a well-trained workforce, and proximity to multiple modes of transportation. Renton has all that as well as a pro-business attitude. There are so many reasons why this made sense, we figured this is a great opportunity. Go out there and put our name in the hat as one of the premiere sites to start this, and not wait for someone to come calling,” said Mayor Armondo Parvone.

The city says large corporate spaces like Southport on Lake Washington are ready for new companies to move in.

At Monday night’s virtual meeting, Renton City Council voted unanimously to pass a resolution authorizing pursuit of a COVID-19 manufacturing facility.
